Our founding story
From a side venture to a firm
The firm began its journey in 2014 as JW Tech Studio, founded by John Woon with two partners. John — a major in Computer Science and Software Engineering — ran the studio as a side venture while working at a local software house. After two years he moved into the corporate world, joining a German corporation as a senior software engineer, where he spent four years sharpening the discipline that still shapes how we work.
In 2020 he left that post to commit to the studio fully, rebuilding JW Tech Studio as Tanuki Works — Tanuki Solutions Sdn. Bhd. — and opening the office at Arcoris Mont Kiara. The rebrand was not only a change of name but a statement of what the firm was for.
The name comes from the tanuki of Japanese folklore, a creature known for transformation and adaptability. It symbolises change, creativity and the power to shape one’s own destiny — the qualities we bring to each client’s digital presence.
Our small, senior team shares that commitment to craftsmanship. We go deep into each client’s industry, research their competitors, and build web solutions that carry their unique selling points. The results are not merely functional; they are digital canvases that tell the story of the business behind them.
